Currently Reading ~ February 6, 2010

Maggie went out with me on Saturday and actually bought herself a book today. While she reads a lot more than I do these days, she rarely plunks down the money to buy herself a book. So, when our daughter Sarah recommended this book of correspondence, she began reading "The Guernsey Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Burroughs. She ended up reading it in a day and seemed to be delighted with it.

I am currently reading, and being greatly moved and saddened by, Charles Pellegrino's "The Last Train From Hiroshima" which documents--in unique form--the memories of the survivors of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs. The first chapter for example, for example, begins at ground zero and then explains what happened in fractions of a second as it expands out across the city. Chapter two covers the time immediately after the explosions end. It is a sin that the average American remains in the dark about this horror--even those who think they are not.

I am also reading "The Collected Sermons of William Sloan Coffin" on my sabbaths and have marked to be read Nicholas A. Basbanes three volume history about the collection and preservation of books, "A Gentle Madness," "Patience & Fortitude" and "A Splendor of Letters."
